John Paul II quote of the day (Aug. 19)

Guarding the deposit of faith is the mission which the Lord has entrusted to his Church and which she fulfils in every age.

What did he mean by 'deposit of faith'? The sum of the faith of all believers?

Good question, Steve.

I think he meant it more along the lines of the body of truths given to us by Christ and further illuminated by the action of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and elsewhere.

As an example, I think John Paul's sense of the term would probably closely match what Paul was getting at in 2 Timothy 1:14, when he exhorted Timothy to "guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us."
