I think he meant it more along the lines of the body of truths given to us by Christ and further illuminated by the action of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and elsewhere.
As an example, I think John Paul's sense of the term would probably closely match what Paul was getting at in 2 Timothy 1:14, when he exhorted Timothy to "guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us."
